What Happens If You Don’t Fuel?

Your body primarily relies on stored carbohydrates (glycogen) for energy during running. But those stores are limited. When they run out, you hit what runners call:

  • “The wall”
  • Sudden fatigue
  • Slowing pace despite effort
  • Mental fog
  • Poor coordination

At that point, it’s not about toughness anymore—it’s physiology.Even hydration alone isn’t enough. You need carbohydrates + fluids to sustain performance.

Fueling Is a Strategy, Not a Guess. One of the biggest mistakes runners make? Trying something new on race day.Fueling should be:

  • Planned
  • Structured
  • Practiced

That means:

  • Testing gels, chews, or drinks during long runs
  • Understanding how often you need fuel (typically every 30–45 minutes, depending on the runner)
  • Learning what your stomach tolerates
  • Dialing in how hydration fits into your plan

Because what works for one runner may not work for another.
