Race Fueling, Is it Important?

Is Race Fueling Important? (Short Answer: Yes… but let’s talk about why.)

After listening to Des and Cara talk about the Boston Marathon, one moment really stood out—not just for how fast the athletes were running, but for how fragile performance can be when something small goes wrong. There was a widely discussed situation where an elite athlete missed her fueling bottle during the race—something that might seem minor to the average runner, but at that level, it can completely derail performance. In elite racing, fueling isn’t optional—it’s precision. And when that plan breaks down, so does the outcome.

But here’s the truth: this doesn’t just apply to elites. It applies to you, too.

Fueling Isn’t Just for MarathonsA common misconception is that fueling only matters in the marathon. That’s simply not true.If you’re running:

  • A 10K and pushing your limits
  • A half marathon
  • A marathon
  • Or going even longer (50K, 100-mile races)

…fueling can be the difference between finishing strong and completely falling apart. The longer you’re out there—and the harder you’re working—the more your body depends on a steady supply of energy.

As a coach, my goal is to help each athlete develop a fueling strategy that works for them! Message me for coaching details or consultation coaching calls.
